Planning in Pockets

For too long, decisions about Kensington have been made by people who don’t live here. To develop a comprehensive plan that puts the community at the center, we’re bringing together different groups of people across the neighborhood and asking each group to name their priorities and ideas for Kensington.

A pocket of people can be:

  • Kensington friends, family, neighbors, coworkers;

  • Part of an existing group, like a neighborhood group, club, class, or team; or

  • A new group that you bring together for this occasion.

The goal is to include as many neighbors as possible in planning the future of Kensington. We created the Pockets Toolkit to help pockets of people throughout Kensington have productive conversations about the community.

The Pockets Toolkit

The Pockets Toolkit is a resource to help pockets of people throughout Kensington have productive conversations about concerns and priorities related to the future of the community. The Toolkit will ask your pockets to reflect on Kensington’s past and what you envision for the future.

The results of your pockets meetings will be combined with the feedback of many other pockets throughout Kensington to build a comprehensive, community-driven, and trauma-informed plan that we can collaboratively implement with residents, businesses, government, and other service providers.

We want to hear from you!

We need as many people who live, work, or play in Kensington to come together to discuss the future of this community. The following steps are a guide to help you facilitate a productive conversation with a pocket of people.

1. Schedule a meeting with your pocket. We want your feedback by November 17th!

Identify the pocket of people you want to facilitate a meeting with. To promote the meeting, use this flyer. NKCDC and Impact Services will also provide food for your meetings with 72 hours’ notice! Reach out to us at efarrell@impactservices.org or kmiranda-lozada@nkcdc.org for help with food.

2. Review the following resources before your scheduled meeting.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Kensington Planning Process, The Facilitator Packet will help you understand how we got here and where we’re going, as well as provide tools to hold a productive and inclusive meeting. Inside the Facilitator Packet is information about the planning process, history of community-defined goals, a suggested meeting agenda, and meeting agreements to foster an inclusive space.

3. Come prepared! Print out the Handouts and Pocket Presentation Notes for your meeting.

Notes on the Pocket Presentation will help a facilitator present the Kensington Planning Process to a pocket of people. The Handouts Packet should be printed for each meeting attendee. It includes open ended questions about past community-defined priorities, questions about our living conditions, and a worksheet to brainstorm new ideas for transforming Kensington. These handouts will help guide your conversation about priorities and concerns for Kensington.

4. Host your meeting.

Take attendance with the sign-in sheet, go through the Pocket Presentation to introduce the Kensington Planning Process to your group, and discuss the printed Handouts with your pocket. Encourage pocket attendees to fill out the worksheets, be prepared to take your own notes, and collect all completed papers.

5. Share your pocket’s feedback with us!

We are asking that pocket facilitators return the Handouts to kensingtonplan@gmail.com by November 19th. These materials will be combined with many other pockets throughout Kensington to develop a comprehensive, community-driven, and trauma-informed plan.

Additional Resources

We also published Additional Resources for Facilitators which includes tools to help you have an inclusive and productive conversation with your pocket, including frequently used terms and phrases, questions for getting the conversation started, and information on social determinants of health and the impacts of trauma.

For additional questions about hosting a meeting, please reach out to us at kensingtonplan@gmail.org. Follow the link below to view the Pockets Toolkit in full.

A video guide on how to use the Pockets Toolkit!

First up: parks pockets!

This past January, the City of Philadelphia announced that a portion of its first Opioid Settlement Funds would be invested in Kensington. The city has dedicated funds to Kensington parks, schools and programs to keep people in their homes, and has said it will follow this community-driven planning process to determine how the funds will be spent.

Six Kensington parks will receive money from the city. We invite Kensington neighbors to attend one or more of these public meetings to help plan changes you want to see at your local parks!
